Recommendations to Prevent Fungus Growth in CED Anode Cell System

January 3, 2020

The main sources of Fungus in CED Anode Cell System is DI Water as Micro-Organisms (Fungus) are present everywhere. These micro-organisms grows well in Anolyte because of Four main reasons as listed below:

  1. Mild Acidic Condition - Anolyte contains mild organic acid mainly organic acid which is a good source of food for micro-organisms to grow.
  2. Restricted flow Inside Anode Cells - Circulation is slightly restricted inside Anode Cells, mainly in semi-circular cells at both the corners (if we try to increase the flow, anolyte will come out of Anode Cell and enter into ED Tank). this makes lower circulation flow of Anolyte, & lower circulation is good condition for micro-organism growth.
  3. Anolyte Pump is Kept OFF when NO Production - Micro-Organisms grows well in stagnant water. Hence, when Anolyte pump is OFF, it is good condition for micro-organisms growth.
  4. Warm Anolyte - Anolyte is always warm as Anode SS Plate delivers current and it is exothermic reaction, releasing heat during ED Coating. Slight warm anolyte is good condition for micro-organism growth.

Recommendations:    To control/avoid fungus growth following steps are to be followed:

  1. Clean all Anode cells by removing SS Electrode & remove all Fungus by JET water spray.
  2. Circulate DI water and drain till all dead fungus is out of the system.
  3. Provide a H2O2 circulation (Maximum concentration upto 3%. It is actually as recommended by paint supplier) for 4 to 6 hours and then drain.
  4. Repeat DI water cleaning 3-4 tildes till DI water pH is normal.
  5. Adjust anolyte conductivity by adding Acid additive before starting production to desired range.
  6. Increase conductivity of Anolyte to 2000 microS/cm in consultation with paint supplier.
  7. Run Anolyte Pump continuously 24 x 7.
  8. Use approved biocides by paint supplier and add small doses every time.
  9. Install bag filters to arrest the dead fungus in pump delivery line.
  10. Install UV lamp in DI water line just before water enters into Anolyte tank.
